For many manual wheelchair users, the choice between staying with a manual chair and moving to a power wheelchair is not always straightforward.

A manual wheelchair may already fit well, support the right seating position and work with the user’s daily routine. The challenge may only appear when distances become longer, outdoor surfaces become more demanding or fatigue starts limiting activities.

Rather than replacing a suitable manual wheelchair, a power assist system adds powered support when it is needed. For the right user, this can provide a practical middle ground between fully manual mobility and moving to a full power wheelchair.

Where do you need additional support?

Consider a typical week.

Where does mobility become difficult?

Can you safely control the system?

Strength is only one consideration.

Dexterity, coordination, sitting stability and the ability to steer and brake safely may also affect suitability.

Depending on the user’s circumstances, an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or rehabilitation professional may form an important part of the assessment.

How will you transport it?

Think about how the wheelchair and power assist unit will be loaded into a vehicle, how much storage space is available and whether components need to be removed.

Is your wheelchair compatible?

Power assist systems are not universal.

The wheelchair frame, configuration and mounting requirements need to be checked for the specific product being considered.
